Introduction

One of the largest gaming service providers in Asia sought to modernize its Customer Identity and Access Management (CIAM) platform on Amazon Web Services (AWS) to handle critical online betting transactions.

The organization required a robust solution to meet strict performance and uptime demands – ensuring minimal disruption and zero data loss even under heavy loads or simultaneous AWS Availability Zone (AZ) failures. Partnering with Midships, the provider adopted a high-performance CIAM environment powered by Ping AIS and the Midships Ping AIS Accelerator.

Challenges

  1. High Transaction Volume

The Customer needed to sustain a demanding 1,667 transactions per second (TPS) – 68% FIDO, 32% non-FIDO – during peak betting periods without compromising response times or reliability.

  2. Resiliency in a Single-Cluster, Multi-AZ Setup

Although AIS was deployed in a single cluster across multiple AZs, the Customer needed robust failover strategies to mitigate partial or full AZ outages without losing data.

  3. Tight Recovery Objectives

Near-zero Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and minimal Recovery Time Objective (RTO) targets meant the Customer couldn’t tolerate downtime or data loss – even if all AZs were impacted concurrently.

  4. Manual CI/CD Bottlenecks

Inefficient build and deployment workflows in Jenkins required significant user intervention, resulting in potential release delays and higher risk of configuration inconsistencies.

  5. Limited Observability and Incomplete Testing

Generating realistic test data, simulating load conditions, and analyzing post-test metrics posed challenges. Accurately measuring performance under stress – particularly in failover scenarios – required more comprehensive testing and monitoring.

Solution

  1. Performance Testing & Optimization

Automated Load and Break Tests: Used JMeter to validate throughput under varying load scenarios, closely mirroring production conditions. Targeted Remediation: By identifying and fixing performance bottlenecks, the solution ensured responsive user experiences during peak demands.

  2. Resiliency Engineering

Single-Cluster, Multi-AZ Configuration: Built safeguards against AZ-wide outages, helping maintain availability and preventing data loss. Failover Drills: Tested recovery times under different severity levels – including total AZ failure – to confirm minimal RTO and near-zero RPO.

  3. Streamlined CI/CD Pipeline

Jenkins Pipeline Chaining: Reduced manual clicks by automatically handing off outputs between pipeline stages, accelerating releases and lowering the risk of human error. Consistent Deployments: Standardized build, test, and deploy steps enabled repeatable processes that rapidly delivered new features and patches.

  4. Enhanced Observability & Metrics

Centralized Logging and Dashboards: Provided deep insight into latency spikes, resource utilization, and system health, enabling swift issue resolution. Detailed Reporting: Facilitated collaborative post-test analysis, allowing the Customer to proactively address any emerging bottlenecks.

Results

  1. Surpassed Transaction Goals

In production-like trials, the CIAM platform consistently exceeded the 1,667 TPS requirement, achieving 1,700 TPS for prolonged periods without performance degradation.

  2. Minimal Downtime & Zero Data Loss

Multiple failover simulations confirmed that RPO remained at 0, while RTO ranged from 10 to 15 minutes – including node scaling time – ensuring uninterrupted betting services and preserving full data integrity.

  3. Faster & More Reliable Releases

By automating Jenkins pipelines, the Customer drastically cut manual steps in build and deploy cycles, leading to more frequent, stable updates with fewer misconfigurations.

  4. Improved Operational Confidence

Through iterative performance tests and resilient failover drills, stakeholders gained trust in the CIAM platform’s ability to withstand surging traffic and AZ-wide disruptions – a crucial advantage in the fast-paced gaming industry.

Conclusion

By implementing the Midships Ping AIS Accelerator in an AWS-based PingIdentity AIS environment, this leading Asian gaming provider achieved robust performance, near-zero downtime, and zero data loss in highly demanding betting scenarios. The streamlined CI/CD pipeline and proactive performance engineering equipped the organization to deliver a seamless user experience, protect critical data, and confidently scale its online gaming services without compromising on reliability or security.
